There’s nothing quite like a good castle. Imposing, fortified and regal, they are filled with secret hiding holes, passageways and defenses.
Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the best three castles in Japan. The outer castle keep is original and gives the visitor a fantastic insight in to the architectural beauty of these magnificent buildings. Made almost entirely of timber and sitting atop steep, fluted stone walls, Japanese castles have a real presence and dominate the skyline from the city and towns below them.
This visit, the autumn colours hadn’t quite made it to Kumamoto as hoped however we could still enjoy the majestic views and the beauty of the castle.
To see it in another season, check out my cherry blossom post here.
