You know it has been a long time since you were last at a place when you have to dig out an old-school photo album to find the evidence of your visit there.
It’s over thirteen years since I was last in Kuala Lumpur, and in preparation for this coming weekend’s work trip there I thought I’d post some photos of my last visit. However, when I opened the digital file for February 2001, there weren’t any photos there! The last of my pre-digital photographic trips!
In 2001, my husband and I set off on our extended (and somewhat belated) honeymoon. We had tickets to Japan via Kuala Lumpur. Our plan wasn’t too well thought-out – we had booked two nights in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, then had no plans for the other 58 days until our flight to Osaka departed. We had vague ideas of beaches, islands, Singapore and Thailand and maybe a hop across to Vietnam, but largely we were relying on a couple of Lonely Planets and what other travellers would tell us about en-route.
Now, my new(ish) husband had never left Aussie soil, but the intrepid traveller in me thought “he’ll be right” and didn’t think twice before launching him into a world of hostels, pit toilets, chicken buses and deep-fried scorpions. Maybe not the wisest decisions but nearly fourteen years later he’s still my husband and has learned to love travelling almost as much as me. Anyway, our first stop was the Malay capital of Kuala Lumpur, and it is here that I am making a fleeting return with my work colleagues this weekend.
This is what Kuala Lumpur looked like back in 2001 when I was last there – photos courtesy of a travelling companion whom we “collected” along the way from Malacca to Singapore – believe it or not but theses are slides that he took on the trip. Slides! Remember suffering through “slide nights” with your parents and their friends growing up? Gen Y will never have that experience… they are missing out… Thanks for the images, Greg!
Kuala Lumpur in 2001…
Will show you Kuala Lumpur in 2014 next week – hopefully over a bowl of nasi goreng and a Tiger beer!
Any must-sees or must-dos while I’m there? Let me know! I’d love to hear from you.
