Egypt: A Land Before Time

The Pyramids.
The Sphynx.
The Nile.
The Valley of the Kings.
Abu Simbel.
Sharm El Sheik.
Mt Sinai.

All typically Egyptian and all bloody ancient! Over five thousand years ago this ancient civilisation constructed monuments that still defy our understanding today. Egypt is a country of wonder; of harshness; of extremes; of deep history; of unrest; of magnificence.

This photo is the first in a series from my Egyptian travels. We begin this journey in Abu Simbel, undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Egypt.

Built for Ramesses the Great, these temples of Abu Simbel were a way for the pharaoh to immortalise himself. The two original temples were carved into the sandstone on the bank of the Nile but in an engineering marvel were moved further up the bank piece by piece and rebuilt high above the water level of the Aswan Dam. Their original location is now under water.

The Great Temple is so exactly designed that the first sun rays on February 22nd and October 22nd every year shine onto the back wall and illuminate the statues of four Egyptian gods. Amazing.
